Lyn Stone on using oils in illustration.

Oil illustrations… Now that’s not a very common medium at all when working in the field of illustration, but you can get some great results and very rich colours indeed.
Lyn Stone combined working with oils and a more cartoony style and was quite pleased with the results. When using oils she favours Schmink artists’s quality oils, because they are specifically made for painting in glazes. For illustrations you need a far less heavy handed way of working with oils and she finds applying the oils in thin glazes with a Kolinsky sable brush a much better way to work.

The cat and dog are called Gizmo and Scatz, and along with a friend who Lyn had asked to write a story around them, were created for a simple picture book.
