British paper portrait illustrator Daniel Morgenstern pays tribute to comic book artist and creator of ‘Sgt. Rock’, Joe Kubert who died recently aged 85.
Kubert was very much an unsung hero of the comic book world, his ‘ragged edge’ characters lacking the polish of other comic book artists, but he leaves behind a legacy spread across comic books published over eight decades and built into the Kubert School. Founded in 1976 in Dover, N.J., the school remains the US’s only accredited trade school for comic book artists. Many of todays renowned comic book artists owe their careers to Joe Kubert.
